How Can You Tell If It’s Gold Or Not?

With a small file, make a scratch make sure it is not in immediately obvious spot. While wearing rubber gloves, use a glass, a wooden or even a plastic stick to apply a drop of nitric acid to the filed spot. Observe the reaction the when your done, rinse the jewelry and everything else you very well in running water.
If there is no reaction what so ever then it is gold. However, if there is a bright green reaction on the base metal especially if there is a green in the scratch, that is a gold layer over base metal which is (gold plated). If there’s a milky reaction in the scratch, it’s a gold layer over silver.
